What you see above is "Evil Ash" in his commander armor and helmet in "Army of Darkness". The middle pictures are my original concept rendering and below them are Nick Petrosino's final renderings.

Return to how-to index

In 1991, I was hired to work on the design and sculpting of the armor of "Army of Darkness" by Jeff Hedgecock, of then Vorhut Fahnlein Arms. I started with drawings of the pieces we needed to sculpt to create the vacuum form armor for the background players. I also did some rough sketches of what the metal armor should look like including the Deadite's commander "Evil Ash". The director liked the concept, but wanted a more "cartoony" look. By then I was busy sculpting clay into armor shapes, so I recommended to Jeff an artist friend of mine (Nick Petrosino) to do the revised drawings. The director (Sam Raimi) OKed the look, Jeff made the metal parts of the armor and I did a plastilene sculpt over the metal helmet base.
